Women in Popular Music
exhibition & venue design
08/2022
A male-dominated music industry reinforces power imbalances through informal networks and gatekeepers, perpetuating gender inequality. These structural issues are often normalized, underscoring the need for greater visibility. My bachelor’s project, Women in Popular Music, addresses this by creating a mobile exhibition and event space aimed at both industry professionals and the public.
The space combines various media to raise awareness, offering a platform for personal stories, networking, and showcasing women-focused initiatives. It features three main components: a light installation, an audio installation, and a customizable stage with a video installation on an LED screen.
Part I: Light installation
Attract attention, as large, bright, direct & provocative as possible. Aesthetics are based on neon signs of quotes and keywords. The light installations are Inspired by works from Vera Röhm, Barbara Kruger & Jenny Holzer
Part II: Sound installation
„Seen Not Heard“
This work deals with the topic of sexualised violence in the music industry. At the centre of the work are audio recordings of women's personal experiences read aloud by men. Visitors can listen to the reports via headphones. The integrated objects are representative of the time and place of the events.
Part III: Video installation „Decoding the Music Industry“
& Stage
Square LED screen measuring 250 x 250 cm. In the video installation, the ‘machine’ provides information about the gender situation in the music industry and the stage is a venue for various formats, e.g. lectures, readings, panels, film screenings or live music sessions.
